The local picture

What we deal with in Sheffield.

Sheffield still has real manufacturing, concentrated along the Don valley and the Lower Don corridor, and it sits close to residential areas. Assessments for those operations, and for residential schemes proposed near them, are the most technically demanding work in the city, because the sources are varied, frequently tonal and often continuous.

At the other extreme, a third of the city lies inside the Peak District National Park. Night-time background levels there are among the lowest we measure anywhere, which changes the answer for any plant assessment: BS 4142 compares against background, and there is almost none.

The city also has a very large purpose-built student accommodation stock. Those schemes combine high-density residential with city-centre noise and internal noise transfer between rooms, so they usually need both a planning-stage assessment and a considered sound insulation strategy.

We read your checklist before we price it.

Validation requirements vary between authorities and between applications. We read the one for yours before quoting, so the scope matches what is being asked for rather than what is usually asked for.

Questions

Sheffield: common questions.

Do you cover the Peak District part of Sheffield?

Yes. It is worth flagging early if your site is inside the National Park, because both the background sound levels and the planning considerations are different from the rest of the city.

Do you assess student accommodation schemes?

Regularly. They need the external assessment for planning and a sound insulation strategy for internal transfer between rooms and from circulation space, and the second is usually the one that causes trouble later if it is left until construction.
