Acoustic consultants in Bolton.
Mill conversions, town centre regeneration and the moorland edge, which between them cover most of what acoustics has to deal with.
The local picture
What we deal with in Bolton.
Bolton's development pipeline leans heavily on reusing what is already there. Former mills and industrial buildings converted to residential are common, and they bring the harder version of the Part E problem: existing structures with continuous floors, shared joists and masonry that was never intended to separate homes. Agreeing the sound insulation strategy at design stage rather than discovering it at pre-completion testing is worth more here than almost anywhere.
The borough runs from a dense town centre out to the moors above Belmont and Bromley Cross. That gives a very wide spread of background sound levels within a short distance, and it is why plant and heat pump assessments in the north of the borough need doing on their own numbers rather than borrowed from a town centre survey.
Bolton Council determines applications across the borough, with the M61 and the Manchester to Preston rail line the dominant transport sources on the western side.
Typical instructions
Work that comes up here.
Taken from the job book rather than a service list. If yours is not on it, it is still likely to be routine. Send the wording and we will say so.
- Sound insulation testing and design advice for mill and industrial conversions
- Baseline noise surveys for town centre residential schemes
- BS 4142 assessments for plant on commercial and light industrial units
- Heat pump assessments in the rural north of the borough
- Construction noise assessment for regeneration sites
Local detail
We read your checklist before we price it.
Validation requirements vary between authorities and between applications. We read the one for yours before quoting, so the scope matches what is being asked for rather than what is usually asked for.

Questions
Bolton: common questions.
Why are mill conversions harder for sound testing?
Because the structure already exists and was built to carry looms, not to separate flats. Continuous floors, shared timbers and unsealed penetrations create flanking paths that the separating construction itself cannot fix, so the strategy has to be designed rather than assumed.
Do you cover the whole borough?
Yes, from the town centre out to Horwich, Westhoughton and the moorland edge. Background levels vary enormously across that distance, which matters for any plant assessment.
